This is a work in progress remake of Super Mario Bros. 2 on the Gameboy. Rather than starting from the NES version, I used the Gameboy Advance (Super Mario Advance) as a reference. This is a mere WIP and many features aren't implemented (carry objects, stand on enemies, crouching...).

You can play with different characters (no gameplay difference at the moment):

  • Toad
  • Toadette
  • Yoshi

You can use the Platformer Plus plugin to make it possible to stand on actors. As for picking them up, that's completely beyond me.

Damn, this is cool! I can't wait to see it in the future!

Hope to see this completed one day. With an Appimage release for Linux too!.

Noise but you need to make a download

You added voices? Awesome! I should totally do that in my game!

I'll Admit; this was so good, i played it TWICE today. Great job!

So cool I love it!

How did you make it so colorful? Never seen this in a GBC, ever!

(+1)

It's just a clever use of the palette and some dithering to create the illusion of more colours. The GBA version's inspiration helped a lot with paying a close attention to the colours.

Toad and Toadette's sprites look like they were ripped straight from Super Mario Maker 2! So what about Yoshi's sprites?

(+1)

Toad and Toadette were adapted from Super Mario Maker 2, but a lot of sprites were missing that I had to recreate (small versions, climbing and character selection).
Yoshi is inspired by a fan made spritesheet that I heavily updated. I'm not fully happy with the results so I'll keep iterating on it. Unfortunately there is no official Yoshi platformer sprite.

Very nice, I was playing SMB2 just yesterday on my Anbernic. I’m impressed at the layout of the first level. You nailed it. Be great to see it populated and playable, even if it’s only L1.

This is SO cool. I really hope you continue it. The graphics look great on GBC

Thanks for the encouragement!
I'd love to continue, it but I'm not sure how complex would it be to implement some features in GBS (e.g. pulling and throwing enemies or vegetables, standing on enemies or flying eggs...).
If you've got any ideas, please let me know :-)

Pulling and throwing veggies would be rather easy, especially with the new sprite system. You could just make a sprite with the player that includes the veggies. Standing on an enemy would be more challenging. I bet it’s possible though. There are some really helpful and amazing people on the GBstudio discord that might be able to help

Next version of GBStudio will have actors you can stand on so you should try!

I read the changelog for GBS 3.1 but couldn’t find anything related to what you mentioned. Can you point to some doc?

I’m confused too. I was told by devs it would be in but maybe it’s been delayed
